| Syllabus: | In this unit, the roles of metals in life, including coordination chemistry in biological environments and the structure and function of enzymes containing metals, are discussed. Iron-based proteins involved in oxygen transport and respiration, including redox chemistry of cytochromes, are examined. The principles of molecular recognition important in sensor design and applications, including bioelectrochemistry and biosurfaces, are explored. Finally, aspects of small and large drug molecules in medicine are summarised. |
| Syllabus: | This unit will consider experimental and computational approaches in the study of biomolecular systems. Computational biochemistry will introduce computational approaches to understanding of biomolecular structure and function, whilst bioelectrochemistry will discuss the experimental approaches used to study and harness biological electron transfer reactions for disease management and bio-energy conversion. Finally, biospectroscopy will consider the applications of spectroscopic techniques to determine the biological chemistry of disease, as a route to more effective disease therapies or diagnostic methods |
