| UNIT REFERENCES, TEXTS, OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT DETAILS: | The most up-to-date information about unit references, texts and outcomes, will be provided in the unit outline. |
| Syllabus: | A 75 hour community service placement with an approved host organisation and a 20 hour placement in the Curtin Volunteers! John Curtin Weekend Program. These placements will be supported by pre, mid and post placement classes to reflect on learning outcomes. A pre-placement class will introduce concepts and theories to apply in the professional working environment; understanding of Australian workplace culture; and self-assessment practices. Defining a project or identifying responsibilities on the placement and methods for articulating employability skills for a successful placement will be covered. Opportunities are provided to discuss the application of discipline knowledge during the placement. The mid-placement class will enable students the opportunity to report on their progress and contribution to the organisation; identify any constraints or limitations; and reflect on learning outcomes. Sharing experiences with peers and comparing the interpersonal skills required to interact effectively in multicultural environments will be a focus. A post-placement class provides a chance to reflect on their overall experiences. It is an opportunity to identify how their skills and capabilities have been enhanced, and share similarities and differences in Australian workplace culture in comparison to their home country. Planning a pathway forward for exploring how they will continue to enhance and communicate their employability skills and possibly continue to contribute to their community upon returning home is addressed. Toward the end of the class there will be the opportunity to celebrate successes and achievements with the students, workplace supervisors and members of the University community. |
