Lecture: 1 x 3 Hours Weekly
Tutorial: 1 x 1 Hours Weekly
Prerequisite(s): 310317 (v.2) Supply Chain Modelling and Optimisation 501 or any previous version
Syllabus: This unit provides the skills necessary for optimal decision making in relation to warehouse design and operation. Basic concepts of warehouse models and processes are covered. Decisions concerning design, tactical and operational aspects of warehousing are discussed and their flow-on effects are studied. Design decisions involve layout issues as well as storage and retrieval transport mechanisms. Tactical decisions involve allocation and products to space. Operational decisions are concerned with storage and retrieval planning as well as online assembly. Systems for total quality management to handle material flow are examined and the interface between logistics and manufacturing is analysed. The problem of optimal facility location is investigated and several core facility location models are evaluated. Where applicable, the unit considers the use of heuristic algorithms to obtain optimal solutions. Case studies are used to highlight and expand the understanding and application of the topics discussed in the unit.
