Syllabus: | Overview of plant propagation, structures and materials. Propagation by seed: origin, sources, processing and storage of seeds, germination process and practical considerations in seed sowing. Seed dormancy mechanisms and techniques for overcoming seed dormancy. Germination times of miscellaneous native species. Propagation from cuttings: general principles and techniques, anatomical and physiological aspects. Layering techniques. Propagation by separation and division of vegetative propagules. Plant tissue culture - facilities and equipment, practical considerations, general principles of micro-propagation and systematic culture medium formulation. Specialised plant culture techniques; embryo culture, anther culture, invitro cell selection, somaclonal variation and transformation. Grafting: general principles and techniques, cellular and physiological aspects. |
