Syllabus: What is economics? - the economic problem; scarcity; opportunity cost; marginal analysis; efficiency; equity; economic models; production possibility frontier. Demand and supply analysis - markets and prices; demand; supply; market equilibrium. Elasticity - price elasticity of demand; price elasticity and total revenue; income elasticity of demand; cross elasticity of demand; price elasticity of supply. Efficiency and equity - consumer surplus; producer surplus; efficiency versus fairness. Markets in action - price controls; taxes; global markets; free trade and protection. Market failure -, externalities; property rights; Coase theorem, public goods, common resources. The economics of the firm - economic profit; decision time frames; production function; law of diminishing returns; short run cost; fixed and variable cost; average and marginal cost; long run cost; economies and diseconomies of scale. Market structures - pricing and output decisions of firms in different markets; perfect competition; monopoly; monopolistic competition; oligopoly.
