Introduction

This course, offered in collaboration with the University of Western Australia, is for students of architecture, landscape architecture, planning or a relevant discipline, seeking to supplement their education with a specific orientation to urban design issues. The course is designed to build knowledge about urban design and urban development processes (with a focus on the Australian and South-East Asian contexts), improve techniques of urban analysis, design and community engagement, and strengthen interdisciplinary approaches and the coordination of architectural, landscape and planning objectives in urban development.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelor's degree in architecture, landscape architecture, planning or a relevant discipline from a recognised university completed within the past three years. An interview and examples of student and/or professional work may also be requested.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning will not be granted but units may be substituted, at the Course Coordinator's discretion, with other optional units from the graduate program.

Duration and Availability

This course is one semester full-time or two years part-time. Part-time students are required to complete units in a prescribed sequence as advised by the Course Coordinator.

Course Organisation

The main activity of the course takes place in the design studio, where students have the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts and instruction in specific technical areas of urban design to current projects, engaging with government agencies and community groups to develop practical solutions to significant design and development challenges. Optional units ensure that all students gain an understanding and appreciation of the central disciplines of urban design: architecture, planning and landscape architecture. Optional units will be selected according to the student's undergraduate background and must be approved by the Course Coordinator.

Career Opportunities

The principal employment destinations for graduates will be state and local government planning departments and private consulting practices.
