This course is designed for those with some background experience in translating or interpreting who are seeking to further develop their theoretical knowledge and skills for professional development and improved employment prospects. It examines the impact of modern linguistics on the theory and practice of language transfer from a cross-cultural perspective. It provides a forum for the discussion of ethics of interpreting and translating and promotes intercultural awareness.
Applicants have knowledge of a language other than English (LOTE) at University level or NAATI Level 2. Those without LOTE may be required to undertake a language unit. For those whose school education was not conducted through the medium of English, an IELTS overall band 7 (minimum 7 in speaking and writing) or CUTE A or equivalent is required.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. No more than one unit will be exempted and exemptions will not be permitted for work experience alone.
The fee-paying course is one semester full-time or equivalent part-time study.
This course examines the following topics: impact of modern linguistics, the theory and practice of language transfer from a cross-cultural perspective, clarification on the role of ethics in interpreting and translating and how it promotes interculturalawareness.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
