BEng(Curtin) or BEng(Hons)(Curtin), BSc(Curtin)
Course CRICOS Code: 050573D
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas:
5 Years
This double degree equips students to work in a professional capacity in both mining engineering and extractive metallurgy areas of the minerals and energy industries, through a strategic alliance between the Western Australian School of Mines Mining Engineering and Minerals Engineering programs. In the science degree, students major in the extraction of metals from their ores. Mining engineers are responsible for the design, planning and operation of a mine. Many responsibilities are defined by law. Management of underground mines is restricted to mining engineering graduates. This course provides a comprehensive knowledge in a broad range of science and technology, particularly those aspects concerned with conservation of the environment, health and safety, ventilation, pollution and management of both people and resources. Extractive metallurgy requires a sound knowledge and understanding of chemistry and the principles of engineering, particularly chemical engineering. Metallurgists are involved in plant operations and control, management and research.
TEE Applicable Mathematics, Calculus, Chemistry and Physics.
Students will be required to complete an approved first aid course prior to being eligible for course completion. In order to be adequately trained as a professional engineer, it is mandatory that the student undertakes 12 weeks of relevant practical experience during the course. The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course.
High performing candidates without some of the prerequisite subjects may be admitted but will be required to complete appropriate bridging and special course units as prescribed.
This course is five years full-time or equivalent part-time study.
The first two years of the course may be undertaken either on the Bentley or Kalgoorlie campus. The first six semesters focus particularly on mining engineering, semesters seven and eight focus on metallurgy and semesters nine and ten complete the mining engineering major. The professional years, three to five, are studied in Kalgoorlie.
The Bachelor of Engineering is recognised by the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and is accredited by the Institution of Engineers, Australia. After a set period of time in industry, graduates can apply to the Department of Industry and Resources (Western Australia) to sit for examinations qualifying them for the various statutory Certificates of Competency (Underground Supervisor, Quarry Manager, and First Class Manager).
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. Some costs are required for associated field trips. A requirement for graduation is the successful completion of a Senior First Aid certificate which participants are expected to pay.
Curtin University reserves the right to alter the internal composition of any course to ensure learning outcomes retain maximum relevance. Any changes to the internal composition of a course will protect the right of students to complete the course within the normal timeframe and will not result in additional cost to students through a requirement to undertake additional units.
