Course CRICOS Code: 003897G
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas:
3 Years
This course is structured to allow students to identify individual special skills and interests during the first year, by engaging in a wide range of design experiences covering the major fields of design practice.
No folio required for entry into first year.
Applicants are required to undertake a Portfolio/Interview process. Please contact Humanities Student Services on (08) 9266 3400 by the end of September for information. Interviews will be in late November and early December. This process allows the applicant to demonstrate relevant skills and aptitudes for success in this demanding course. Recognition of Prior Learning is also assessed at this time. STAT elements considered are E and either V or Q.
Alternative pathways are available for mature age students. Applicants may be required to present to the Department a comprehensive folio of work and attend a personal interview with the teaching staff.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. TISC applicants seeking recognition of prior learning may be required to present a folio and be interviewed. International student's recognition of prior learning is based on a folio on disc and a record of previous study to be submitted along with the international application.
This course is three years full-time or equivalent part-time study. While part-time studies are not discouraged, applicants are reminded that these programs make very great demands on students time outside formal contact hours. A number of units are available in distance education mode.
The common first year is multidisciplinary in order that students, new to design programs at this level, are able to achieve a conceptual view of what constitutes design process and product. In addition to creative studio activities, students are introduced to the technological knowledge and skill base of design and they undertake important introductory studies in this contextual, theoretical and historical aspects. In second and third year, students follow their chief design interest by undertaking a major, for example those wishing to undertake the Furniture Design major complete the common first year of the Bachelor of Arts (Design) and then undertake the Furniture Design major.
Graduates may convert student membership to the national professional design bodies into full professional membership after fulfilling specific conditions.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials. All students are also required to own or have access to a 35mm single-lens reflex camera, either fully manual, or automatic with manual override. The Department strongly recommends that students have access to a computer with software relevant to requirements of the course.
