BSc(Curtin)
Course CRICOS Code: 003884A
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas:
3 Years
Mining engineers are responsible for the planning, design, and operation of a mine. Many responsibilities are defined by law. Management of underground mines is restricted to mining engineering graduates. These courses provide a comprehensive knowledge in a broad range of science and technology including geology, electrical, civil and mechanical engineering, surveying, computing and environmental science, particularly those aspects concerned with conservation of the environment, health and safety, ventilation, pollution and management of both people and resources.
TEE Applicable Mathematics and Physics.
STAT elements considered are E and Q. A certificate of successful completion of an approved course in first aid is required before the degree will be awarded.
Selection is based primarily on attainment in TEE subjects. Well qualified applicants lacking prerequistes may still be considered. The associate degree may be used as a pathway into the science course and science students may transfer to engineering after satisfactory performance during their first year at university.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
This course is three years full-time or equivalent part-time study. The first two years of this course are available at either the Bentley or Kalgoorlie campuses. The final year is available only at the Kalgoorlie campus.
During the course students are required to obtain a minimum of 12 weeks of approved industrial experience. A written report must be presented based on this experience. Students who perform well in the first or second years of the course may be allowed to transfer to the Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Engineering).
After a set period of practical experience in the industry graduates can apply to the Department of Industry and Resources Western Australia to sit for examinations qualifying them for an Underground Supervisors Certificate or Quarry Managers Certificate.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials, including a personal computer. Some costs are required for associated field trips and a Senior First Aid Certificate.
The first two years of this course may be studied at either the Kalgoorlie (Code CKKSC) or Bentley (Code CUKSC) campuses. However, students are encouraged to study in Kalgoorlie to receive an earlier appreciation of the mining industry. The final professional year is only available at Kalgoorlie to maximise industry exposure and employment prospects. Students must nominate a discipline upon enrolment, but it is relatively easy to swap between the Mining and Extractive Metallurgy disciplines in the earlyyears of study, since many subjects are common.
Mining may be combined with Civil and Construction Engineering.
Curtin University reserves the right to alter the internal composition of any course to ensure learning outcomes retain maximum relevance. Any changes to the internal composition of a course will protect the right of students to complete the course within the normal timeframe and will not result in additional cost to students through a requirement to undertake additional units.
