Introduction

The Social Science program provides rich opportunities for students to explore human societies and cultures and how and why they change over time. The program particularly emphasises contemporary social issues and challenges, particularly as associated with economic globalisation, environmental change and social and cultural pluralism. Such issues are considered from a variety of disciplinary and cross-disciplinary perspectives. The program is structured so as to encourage the progressive development of communication and research skills from first to third years.

Course Organisation

This flexible course provides scope for individual choice in the selection of majors and units of study. In first year, students enrol in six optional social science units and choose two elective units or two further social science units from the optional list provided. The broad based studies at first year level provide a foundation for the more specialised majors chosen prior to the commencement of second year. Students are encouraged, though not required, to complete two majors. Students may choose to also complete one of the thematic majors (envrionmental management or development studies), however a thematic major must be taken in conjunction with one of the five social science majors listed above.
