Introduction

The aim of this course is to - produce occupational health and safety professionals who have strong theoretical and practical skills in the disciplines within the occupational health and safety domain. Engender a passion for occupational health and safety and a vision of creating a safer and healthier workplace and surrounding environment for workers and the community. Make a significant contribution to the efficiency of industry and costs to the individual and community through the prevention of injury.Occupational disease and adverse environmental impacts. Further the occupational health and safety profession through development of research skills and encouragement of graduates to discover new knowledge and novel ways of solving problems. Create innovative, confident and progressive occupational health and safety graduates who have generic skills and attributes to enhance the professional practice of occupational health and safety with information and technological literacy, teamwork and communicationskills, critical thinking and problem solving, and a capability and commitment to upholding the professional and ethical values of the profession.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A Bachelor of Science degree plus two years of relevant post-qualification work experience. Work experience is assessed on the basis of level of seniority and responsibility, job description, work-based referee report, publications or other written reports, short courses or conference attendance.

Specific Requirements

Applicants for this course should refer to the Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening and Clearance Section of this publication. Regular access to a computer and the internet will be required to undertake distance units.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is three semesters full-time or equivalent part-time study with study principally conducted on an external basis. The practical unit will have a compulsory on-campus component during the semester break (4 days). Full-time study is available if required subject to availability of units.

Intermediate Awards 1

A student who has completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval from the Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:

Intermediate Award II

Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Management; Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.

Course Organisation

Students are provided with opportunity to specialise and undertake research in occupational health, occupational hygiene, safety and risk management, ergonomics, occupational medicine or other related areas. Those demonstrating excellence in research will have the opportunity to continue to doctoral studies.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
