A detailed understanding of the principles of molecular biology is a pre-requisite to developing commercial applications by molecular biotechnology. This unit examines the molecular biology of animal, plant, insect and bacterial viruses and highlights some of the commercial applications arising from this knowledge including: strategies for the development of the antiviral agents and vaccines, cloning and expression vectors, biological control of insects and pests, strategies for studying oncogenesis and cell apoptosis and tools for diagnosing viral infection and analyzing the epidemiology of viral diseases. The study of viruses is used to broaden the students understanding of gene regulation and nucleic acid replication. There is a brief introduction to the molecular biology and biotechnology of prions, viroids, fungi, algae and protozoa. The final section examines cutting edge technology used to study micro-organisms including nucleic acid sequencing, proteomics and micro-arrays. |
