Syllabus: International nutrition. Introduction to - major nutritional challenges and scope of work; malnutrition in infants, adolescents and adults; micronutrient deficiencies - iron, iodine, vitamin A and zinc; nutrition transitions - the effects of modernisation and urbanisation. Nutritional assessment of vulnerable populations; determinants of hunger and malnutrition - social, political, economic and environmental considerations. Nutrition in emergency situations; programmatic approaches to the prevention and treatment of malnutrition; future challenges; research and policy implications.
