Syllabus: |
The canon of the Bible, discussing major divisions, topics and themes. The problem of authenticity - inspiration and inerrancy. The Catholic and Protestant bibles including the historical and cultural backgrounds to the old testament and the new testament. Historical criticism and methods of literary analysis. Major themes examined in the old testament are - creation, election, promise covenant and fidelity. Introduction to the pentateuch - selections from Genesis and Exodus looking at the cultural background and the religious significance of the writings. Selections from the books of Joshua, Judges 1 and 2, Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings. The prophetic literature - Jeremiah and Isaiah 2. The synoptic gospels - the life and teachings of Jesus as presented by the evangelists. The gospel of John - some major themes selected from the letters of Paul. |
