Introduction

This course provides registered nurses with the theoretical foundation relevant to neuroscience nursing and guides nursing practice in this specialised area of nursing. Applicants are expected to have prior knowledge and skills related to neuroscience nursing as this collaborative course is built on the Graduate Certificate in Neuroscience Nursing course provided by Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Western Australia.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A currently registered nurse who has registration or is eligible for registration with the Nurses Board of Western Australia, holds a bachelor degree in nursing or equivalent or a degree in a related discipline. Applicants with a degree from an appropriate discipline where areas of essential nursing knowledge and skills are deficient, are required to undertake selected units prior to commencing the course. Evidence of successful completion of appropriate research units is also a course prerequisite. Selection is based on academic performance, clinical experience, professional references, 12 months post-registration clinical experience, a satisfactory academic record and evidence of appropriate communication and interpersonal skills.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students who have successfully completed the hospital-based course Graduate Certificate Neuroscience Nursing may receive recognition of prior learning or exemption for the unit Nursing 515 - Neuroscience Nursing.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is one year full-time or two years part-time study. As most units are offered only once in each year and in the required sequence of study, there is some limitation of choice for part-time study.

Course Organisation

Students complete the advanced nursing practice component of this course within an approved hospital or agency course.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials.
