Introduction

This course provides graduates from disciplines other than metallurgy with detailed knowledge and understanding of core areas of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. It is designed especially for graduates currently working within the minerals industry who wish to significantly upgrade their metallurgical knowledge with a view to furthering their careers in this field.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Graduate Diploma in Metallurgy plus two years relevant industrial experience, or an Australian recognised four-year degree in a science or engineering discipline (excluding degrees in extractive metallurgy or minerals engineering or equivalent) plus two years relevant industrial experience.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This full fee paying course is three semesters full-time equivalent, available by part-time external study or full-time study.

Intermediate Awards I

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award, may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course appear below.

Course Organisation

Students select units listed in year one to the value of 200 credits and will be expected to study at least one unit in each of the core areas of Mineral Processing, Pyrometallurgy and Hydormetallurgy, unless covered by prior learning. Up to 100 points may be credited towards this program from units offered from the WASM Mineral Economics Masters program, the Graduate Diploma in Mineral Resources (metallurgy) offered by the University of Queensland, or other suitable programs, subject to approval by theCourse Coordinator. Students choose an additional 100 credit points from the units listed in year two, in consultation with the Course Coordinator. Up to 50 of these points may be credited towards the program from units offered from the Masters in Mineral Resources (metallurgy) offered by the University of Queensland, or other suitable programs.

Graduates can expect to obtain employment or to further their careers in extractive metallurgy, within the minerals industry.
