309048 v.1 Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Geological Engineering)
BEng(Curtin)
Course CRICOS Code: 052796F
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 4 Years
Introduction
This course educates students in the design, construction and performance monitoring of mining-related engineering structures made within or out of geological materials. A few examples of such engineering structures are tailings retention structures on mine sites, underground mining excavations and open cut mining excavations. Students in the discipline will be primarily educated as specialists in the field of mining geotechnical engineering. That is, they are soil and rock engineers first and foremost. However, the strong geosciences foundation provided by this course ensures that they understand the geo-material with which they are working far better than civil or mining engineers, who receive a broad geotechnical education.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
TEE Applicable Mathematics and Physics with either Calculus or Chemistry.
Specific Requirements
STAT elements considered are E and Q.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
The course is four years full-time or equivalent part-time study.
Course Organisation
The first two years of the course covers fundamental mathematics, science, geoscience and engineering-related units which underpin the higher study. In the third year, students undertake more advanced units in geology, a range of mining-related topics and specialist units in geomechanics and engineering geology. The fourth year of this degree is predominantly focused on advanced geotechnical engineering units, environmental management, professional engineering and management units as well as design project work.
Professional Recognition
Application is currently being made to Engineers Australia and the Australasian Institute for Mining and Metallurgy to have the degree recognised.
Career Opportunities
Graduates generally find employment with mining companies, consulting engineering firms or mining industry contractors.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. Some costs are required for associated field trips.
