Introduction

This course is suitable for personnel working in a range of health, educational and human service areas. It develops knowledge and skills in interpersonal communication, group leadership and an understanding of health and human development issues. It also enhances the existing experiential knowledge-base of students and as an introduction to further training in professional counselling. It enables students to specialise in either addictions or general health counselling. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply for the Master of Health Counselling.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelors degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline and at least one year full time or equivalent work experience in interpersonal service provision for example, teachers aide, social trainer, or volunteer telephone counsellor. Applicants without a tertiary degree or equivalent but meet the requirements for tertiary entrance and whose professional experience indicates they would benefit from the course are encouraged to apply and will be considered on a case by case basis.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The fee paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study.

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award, may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course appear below.

Course Organisation

One year full time study (or equivalent part time). Students will be required to complete some units externally and to attend lectures for the other units in block form, for example two day workshops held during the semester and occassionally on weekends. The course develops knowledge and skills in interpersonal communication, group leadership and an understanding of health and human development issues. It also enhances the existing experiential knowledge base of students and is an introduction to further training in professional counselling.
