Introduction

Designed for students who wish to continue their studies in Internet security management to gain further knowledge and skills in managing Internet security and electronic commerce environments. Provides a combination of generic skills, specialist knowledge and practical application that develops a well-rounded graduate, one who has the ability to research and solve problems in the management of Internet security. The practical nature of the course provides assistance in consolidation of learning by actually doing and then reflecting upon that learning process. Students will also gain confidence in their ability to manage problem situations in an Internet environment by applying the technical management knowledge and skills presented.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Students require a bachelor degree in a computing-related discipline as an entry requirement. Students with a degree in a non-computing discipline are required to complete a graduate certificate or graduate diploma in a computing related field in order to gain entry. Students do not need relevant industry experience to undertake this program. To enter the course students must obtain a minimum of 70 per cent average in the Postgraduate Diploma in Internet Security Management.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are not considered within this course, although units may be substituted at the School's discretion. Other units may be approved by the Manager Postgraduate Programs.

Duration and Availability

This course is two years full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Intermediate Awards

A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Postgraduate Diploma in Internet Security Management may apply, under exceptional circumstance provisions, for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School/Department. Course Organisation

The course is a combination of technical, management and research in the area of Internet Security Management. The technical areas encompass computer communications and network security, Internet programming and security, computer forensics. Knowledge and skills in management aspects of Internet security include problem-solving, information security management, project and risk management, business intelligence and cyberwarfare and organisational and change management studies. Students are required toundertake studies in research methods and complete a significant research project in the Internet security area.

Professional Recognition

With a prior computing-related degree graduates may apply for membership of the Australian Computer Society and the British Computing Society. Students successfully completing the Computer Forensics unit may apply for membership of the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society.

Career Opportunities

Graduates generally find employment with business organisations and government agencies with an Internet presence, and organisations undertaking electronic commerce.
