Introduction
A built environment based on Universal Design principles is one in which all users are able to function and participate in everyday activities safely and effectively, according to their ability, without confronting avoidable factors such as poor design, management or maintenance. This course focuses on examining the needs and addressing the issues faced by all users, including those with physical impairments, sensory impairments, or learning difficulties, either on a permanent or temporary basis. It explores the needs of the rapidly increasing numbers of elderly people with a range of disabling conditions. It allows professionals not trained in architecture or the building industry to study construction related areas which they are often required to address, but for which they currently receive little formal training. Conversely, building industry and design professionals will benefit from an awareness of human factors.
