196604 v.3 Master of Leadership and Management
MLM(Curtin)
Course CRICOS Code: 018043G
Registered Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 1.5 Years
Introduction
This course is designed for those seeking an understanding of organisations in the current environment and wishing to develop practical skills assisting in leading and managing people more effectively. It examines leadership and management practices, past and present. These ideas are used to assist in realising individual abilities and potential in real work situations. Participants are encouraged to apply and test these ideas in the workplace and evaluate them in the light of individual experience. The course encourages professional and personal development through action learning that is relevant and transferable to the circumstances of real organisations.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Applicants should be able to demonstrate some of the abilities and qualities of leadership (for example, position of leadership, captain of sporting team, organiser of special interest group), have at least three years work experience in at least one organisation and be personally motivated to play a role as a leader in the Western Australian, Australian or international community. Letters of recommendation are required from leaders in business, government and/or the community and support from a sponsoring organisation indicating the potential of the candidate to have some leadership role over the next five years. Completion of an undergraduate degree is normally expected for admission. Applicants who are highly recommended, have outstanding leadership potential and motivation and can demonstrate that they have the capacity to undertake graduate study may be accepted without an undergraduate degree.
Specific Requirements
Students must complete additional non fee-paying modules - Capstone Leadership Project, and Leadership Seminar Series. The Graduate Board of Examiners require, unless there are exceptional circumstances, that those with more than two failures in the course or more than four units with grades below 60 per cent be excluded from the course, so as to maintain the high standard expected of such a prestigious qualification.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
This fee-paying course is of three trimesters full-time or equivalent part-time study. It is presented mostly in trimesters, allowing full-time students to complete the course in 12 months. Some units are conducted over a week long period requiring the student to have time away from their work. Residential segments and weekend classes are also scheduled during the program, forming compulsory components of the course. Availability of units, work commitments and an intention to undertake the specialisation may increase the course duration to two years.
Course Organisation
Students will be required to attend three Leadership seminars. Students must complete 12 course units plus 2 non fee-paying modules to graduate with a Master of Leadership and Management. Students may select an additional four unit specialisation and instead receive an award of Master of Leadership and Management (Stream). Alternatively, students may select an additional four elective units, receiving instead an award of Master of Leadership and Management (Advanced).
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. Additional costs for accommodation during residential segments and for outdoor activities related to the course will apply.
Special Note
The underlying principle is that all existing students will not be disadvantaged by the restructure of this program in 2002. Affected students should consult the Graduate School of Business to discuss appropriate unit selection and course progression.
