Concepts of elasticity in two and three dimensional continua. Finite element method - introduction, application of stiffness method, matrix solution techniques. Basic assumption of displacement function, elements for 2D plane stress and plain strain, modelling techniques, structural applications. Beyond the Basics - dynamics and nonlinearity. Use of commercial software for finite element analysis. Instability - the theory of buckling. Buckling of columns, frames and plates. Imperfections and restraints.;;
