Review of three phase circuits and singly and doubly excited systems - Review of three phase circuits, review of magnetic circuit theory and flux linkages, Definition of Self and mutual Inductances, Torque production in a singly excited system, Torque production in a doubly excited system. Three-phase Induction Motors - rotating magnetic field theory, Exact equivalent circuit representation, Approximate equivalent circuit, Performance calculations, Torque-speed characteristics, starting torque, maximum torque, NEMA Classification of induction motors and energy efficient motors, equivalent circuit parameters from tests, starting methods and speed control (VVVF, vector control etc). Transformers - principles of operation and equivalent circuit, determination of parameters of approximate equivalent circuit, performance calculations, three phase transformer connections. DC Motors - series and shunt motor models, efficiency and torque-speed characteristics, DC motor speed control. Single phase induction motors - revolving field theory and equivalent circuit, performance calculations, split phase and capacitor start motors. Fractional horsepower motors - permanent magnet dc motor, reluctance motor and hysterisis motor, stepper motors.
