159499 v.3 Bachelor of Science (Medical Imaging Science)

BSc(Curtin)

Introduction
Medical imaging science involves the application of a range of medical imaging procedures which use x-rays (radiography and computed tomography), radioisotopes (nuclear medicine), ultrasound (sonography) or magnetic fields (magnetic resonance imaging) as the forms of radiation to produce an image. Through these procedures and images the structure and functions of various body systems are displayed and a diagnosis of the illness or injury determined.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Physics and Applicable Mathematics.

Specific Requirements
The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course. Applicants for this course should refer to the Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening/Clearance Section of this publication.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability
The course is three years full-time study. First year is full-time at Curtin (Bentley Campus) with second and third years having clinical periods in three different clinical centres.

Course Organisation
All units will be conducted in parallel with units undertaken in the undergraduate program. Additional assessment criteria will be used to reflect the higher degree level. Prospective students are advised that this program requires the full participation in laboratory practical sessions and the clinical program where manual skills, including the ability to lift, manipulate imaging equipment and position fellow students and patients for imaging examinations, independently are an essential part of the development of the graduate. In addition it is essential that all students must participate fully in laboratory practical sessions including acting as subjects for their peer group and as mock patients for other students.

Professional Recognition
Graduates from this program will receive provisional accreditation from the Australian Institute of Radiography which will enable the graduate to obtain employment within Australia, be registered in those States having such legislation upon graduation.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
