Introduction

This course is suitable for personnel working in a range of health, educational and human service areas. It develops knowledge and skills in interpersonal communication, group leadership and an understanding of health and human development issues. It also enhances the existing experiential knowledge-base of students and as an introduction to further training in professional counselling. Graduates of this program are eligible to undertake the Master of Health Counselling.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelors degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline and at least one year full time or equivalent work experience in interpersonal service provision for example, teachers aide, social trainer, or volunteer telephone counsellor. Applicants without atertiary degree or equivalent but meet the requirements for tertiary entrance and whose professional experience indicates they would benefit from the course are encouraged to apply and will be considered on a case by case basis.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The fee paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. Students will be required to complete some units externally and to attend lectures for the other units in block form, for example two to three day workshops held throughout the semester and normally on weekends.

Intermediate Awards

A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Health Counselling (exit only) may apply under exceptional circumstance provisions for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School/Department. Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
