Syllabus: | Process Synthesis and Design integrates knowledge and skills from some previous chemical engineering units for the purpose of synthesising chemical processes. The skill of simulating those processes through the use of chemical process simulators is taught in parallel. Applications and case studies are drawn from the general chemical and hydrocarbon processing industries. The main process synthesis topics covered include the systematic consideration of process alternatives; reactor simulation and reactor network synthesis; separator simulation and separator network synthesis; reactor-separator-recycle network synthesis; heat exchanger network design; and control system synthesis. Students will also learn about conducting sensitivity analysis and optimisation on the simulated chemical processes. A variety of supporting topics are addressed through the semester including the selection of thermodynamic property packages, dynamic simulation, batch process scheduling, solids simulation and process economics. |
