Course Overview
Associate Degrees prepare students to develop broad knowledge and skills for paraprofessional/highly skilled work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 6 qualifications.
The Associate Degree will provide the freedom of choice to start up mining career or be a stepping-stone to further study. This degree prepares students for entry to the Bachelor of Science (Mining) and subsequently Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Engineering) (Honours). Mining specialists work with mining engineers in conducting safe and efficient mine production operations. Students with sufficient background in mathematics, sciences and technologies along with strong communication skills pursue a successful career as mining specialists. These courses provide a comprehensive knowledge in fundamental mathematics and physics, applied mechanics, material science, engineering design, geology, geomechanics, construction, mining technology, computing and environmental science, particularly those aspects concerned with conservation of the environment, health and safety, ventilation, pollution and management of people and resources.
Professional Recognition
The Associate Degree in Mining is recognised by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and graduates are eligible to apply for Associate Grade membership of Australiasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM).

Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for an Associate Degree are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au and include flexible entry pathways. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Applicants will be currently studying or have completed the Advanced Diploma in Metalliferous Mining through Central Regional TAFE in Kalgoorlie.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Students studying the Advanced Diploma through Central Regional TAFE in Kalgoorlie will receive 200 credits of CRL prior to entry into this course
Articulation Agreements
The partnership arrangement with Central Regional TAFE in Kalgoorlie will enhance Curtin’s regional engagement strategies and the endeavour to establish a sustainable regional WA strategy. The articulation pathway across the university and TAFE sectors provides a seamless qualification for regional students. Delivery of the degree will occur in the heart of the mining industry, thereby facilitating strong industry connections with global impact
Course Organisation
Associate Degrees typically contains a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences.
TAFE Students will come into the course, completing the following units to complete the Associate Degree: MATH1014 COMP1005 NPSC1003 PHYS1006 MATH1015 MINE1001 GEOL1000 ELEN1000
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. develop and apply fundamental scientific, engineering and technological principles to mine development projects
2. communicate in ways appropriate to the discipline of mining engineering, using the written word and oral presentations
3. demonstrate responsibility and self-learning skills by applying critical reflection and being proactive
4. describe mining in the global environment and apply best practice standards in mining methods and technologies
5. demonstrate respect for cultural diversity in professional life
6. work in accordance with professional standards and demonstrate responsibility towards the broader community; work in teams
