Course Overview
Master Degrees (Research) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for research, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.
This research, thesis-based specialisation expands knowledge to above that of the specialisation attained at the graduate diploma level, and advances skills in educational research and evaluation. Graduates are expected to be able to plan and conduct research, development or evaluation projects with a degree of initiative, independence and resourcefulness.

Course Overview Note
It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research degree to receive a related graduate diploma but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission.
Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Master Degree (Research) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://research.curtin.edu.au/postgraduate-research/future-research-students/entry-requirements/. Applicants require a Bachelor Degree with a strong academic performance and may also require relevant substantial work experience or Bachelor Honours Degree (first or second class) or Graduate Diploma. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Applicants for the Masters must have qualified for a Bachelor honours degree (first or second class) or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary educational institution. Applicants who have qualified for a Bachelor Honours (first or second class) will be eligible to enter the Master of Research degree; on entry they do not take our their Honours qualification but elect to continue into the Master degree. Honours remains an exit award for the Master degree.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Course Organisation
Master Degrees (Research) require students to undertake an approved research program leading to a thesis for independent examination; they may include advanced level coursework studies.
This research program requires the completion and presentation of a research thesis, which offers the candidate the opportunity to do a substantive piece of research. While considerable flexibility is offered in the choice of topics, the area of study must be one in which the candidate has had some previous study and is within the supervision limits. Contribution to knowledge of the field is an expected outcome of the thesis work. If the thesis is a research study, it may be a replication of another study. In this case, the expectation would be that, as in the case of an original problem, the candidate builds on the work of others, extending that work so that it satisfies the requirement of contribution to the field. Whatever the topic, the candidate must demonstrate a thorough research of the literature, a knowledge of the substance of the field, independence of thought and fluency of expression. The thesis must be presented in an acceptable form in accordance with University policy.

The course is by research and normally requires one to two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study.
