Major/Stream Overview

This major/stream is part of a larger course. Information is specific to the major/stream, please refer to the course for more information.


This major is structured to allow students to develop their interest and build their careers in either Photography or Illustration or a combination of both. Students will learn professional skills tailored towards their specific interests in this area of image making. Exploration, interpretation, development and realisation of ideas for both commercial and personal outcomes will be addressed in this major. Both traditional and digital techniques will be covered in the photography and illustration areas. Professional practice will involve application in advertising, graphic design, publishing, game design, educational and instructional design areas.


Major Overview Note

Students choosing this major within the Bachelor of Arts degree will also choose another major or an elective stream. Choosing a second major allows students to study in an additional discipline area. Choosing an elective stream allows students to undertake further study in the discipline of their first major or choose from a variety of units from around the University.



Major/Stream Entry and Completion Details

Students should complete Design Elements 191 and Design Practice 172 in first year. Applicants are required to achieve a TER score of 70.0 and above, with English requirements having been met.

Major/Stream Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply discipline knowledge of creative practice and both traditional and digital image generation techniques for a commercial design market; create innovative and applicable image design solutions through visual, technical and conceptual research

2. apply critical logic and reflective practice through the design process as a means of creating images in response to a given brief

3. synthesise both visual and written languages, from a variety of sources, as a means of producing relevant image based solutions to design briefs

4. using concept, content and composition create meaningful images reflective of a desired contextual narrative

5. apply discipline knowledge of both traditional and digital image generation techniques through the use of relevant technologies

6. apply problem-solving capabilities to different facets of their daily work; use responsible personal judgement when working independently or collaboratively and utilise the design process to lead a variety of projects toward relevant solutions

7. produce relevant and applicable image design solutions for a wide array of global cultures and subcultures

8. recognise the importance of cultural diversity and visual language; respect individuals from all cultures; develop cross-cultural collaborations that foster innovation and diversity in design activities, studio practice and production within the fields of design photography and illustration

9. work both independently and collaboratively, demonstrating relevant professional practices in the fields of design photography and illustration; produce images that are ethical, sustainable and relevant through applied professional design practice
