310156 v.1 Master of Molecular Biotechnology

Course CRICOS Code: 056852D
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 1.5 Years

Introduction

Biotechnology is one of the most exciting and rapidly growing industries. It affects our lives in many ways from the development of new medicines and drugs to the farming of transgenic plants and animals. This course is designed for those seeking knowledge of the application of molecular technologies in the biotechnology industry. It examines the enabling technologies that drive the modern biotechnology industry and how they are being applied to the development of commercial products and processes. Thiscourse encourages professional and personal development through action learning. Participants apply and test the knowledge gained through case studies, company reports and business plans. Practical hands-on experience is obtained through a molecular techniques workshop or project. Students from this course graduate with the knowledge and practical skills required to work at an advanced level in the biotechnology sector and other support industries.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Students will have completed an approved bachelor degree in a biology or biomedical/life science based discipline or equivalent. Graduates from other science disciplines will be considered on an individual basis.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applicants will be assessed on an individual basis if they have completed equivalent post-graduate units.

Duration and Availability

The course will be available from Semester 2, 2006. It is 18 months (3 semesters) duration.

Intermediate Awards I

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course appear below.

Intermediate Awards II

Graduate Certificate in Molecular Biotechnology, Postgraduate Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology.

Course Organisation

The course comprises of two semesters each of four 25 credit units taught in a lecture and tutorial format. These units cover the applied and theoretical aspects of the molecular biotechnology course. The third semester comprises of a dissertation (critical review of the literature) on a selected topic and a laboratory based molecular techniques unit. The student may select a 25 credit elective unit in place of the dissertation unit. By invitation, if a suitable project is available, a project unit may be undertaken in place of the dissertation and molecular techniques practicum.

Professional Recognition

Students will be eligible for membership of Australian Biotechnology Association and/or equivalent industry organisations internationally.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be able to seek employment in the biotechnology and allied industries, government, hospital and university research and development laboratories.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials. A laboratory coat will be required for any practical work taken involving laboratory work other than in the PCR laboratory. Laboratory coats are provided for use in the PCR laboratory.
