This course (delivered in cooperation with The University of Western Australia) is designed for those participating in an accredited training program of a recognised industry partner to meet their education and training needs. The course aims to provide supervised Public Health practice within an academic framework that is both distinct from and complementary to existing diplomas, masters and PhD qualifications in Public Health. The GDPHP will be awarded on the basis of field competence gained through a system of supervised rotational placements. It is anticipated that graduates will have gained significant employment market advantages.
In addition to the University's standard entry requirements applicants must possess a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification in an appropriate field from a recognised tertiary institution. Full-time or part-time employment in the health sector and evidence of acceptance into the accredited training program of a recognised industry partner.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
This fee-paying course is two years part-time, external study, (in-service learning).
The course is based on in-service learning within a rigorous academic framework. It consists of eight units based on identified competency areas which include professional practice policy and leadership, management communication and leadership, epidemiology and biostatistics information management, healthcare evaluation, health promotion, infectious diseases, risk assessment/management and health economics.
This course will train public health practitioners to industry requirements using apprenticeship-style attachments similar to the long standing approach to professional education and training taken in clinical medicine, dentistry and other health care professions. It will meet an immediate need in so far as it will ensure high academic standards and provide accreditation for the Western Australian Public Health Training Program.
Graduates generally find employment with government, statutory authorities and non-government health agencies.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials.
