This research-based higher degree develops research skills and advances knowledge in the discipline.
An approved honours degree, or postgraduate diploma with well above average marks (usually an average of at least 70), and with adequate training in contemporary literary and cultural theories. Applicants without necessary preparation are required to undertake appropriate bridging units, or an appropriate honours unit. Applicants should further consult the General Information section in this Handbook entitled Regulations for the Degree of Masters (by research).
The course is by research and normally requires one to two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study. The course is also available in part-time mode.
This course is studied as a research degree. The content of the degree should be determined in consultation with the Postgraduate Coordinator, Department of Communication and Cultural Studies. Students without prior studies in research methods and statistical data analysis will be required to undertake relevant preparatory units. This will increase the stated course duration.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research course to receive the Postgraduate or Graduate Diploma in Communication and Cultural Studies but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission.
