Course Overview
Master Degrees (Research) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for research, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.
This course provides a broad foundation for scholarly research to advance nursing theory and guide practice and also provides the foundation for further doctoral studies.

It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework.
Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Master Degree (Research) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://research.curtin.edu.au/postgraduate-research/future-research-students/entry-requirements/. Applicants require a Bachelor Degree with a strong academic performance and may also require relevant substantial work experience or Bachelor Honours Degree (first or second class) or Graduate Diploma. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Specifically applicants are required to be currently registered nurses, or eligible for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, with a bachelor degree in nursing or in a related discipline and have a minimum of one year post-registration clinical experience. Those with a degree from a discipline where areas of essential nursing knowledge and skills are deficient are required to undertake selected units prior to course commencement. Evidence of successful completion of appropriate research units is an additional course prerequisite. Selection is based on academic performance, clinical experience, professional references and an interview. Overseas applicants must have completed a bachelor degree in nursing or a nursing program of three years or more leading to registration, be currently registered in their own country and provide certified documentation to that effect. They must also meet the University's usual entry requirements.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Course Organisation
Master Degrees (Research) require students to undertake an approved research program leading to a thesis for independent examination; they may include advanced level coursework studies.
This course is studied as a research degree. The content of the degree should be determined in consultation with the Director, Postgraduate Studies, School of Nursing and Midwifery.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. demonstrate expert understanding of theoretical knowledge and to reflect critically on that knowledge and their practice
2. think critically, evaluate existing knowledge and ideas, undertake systematic investigation and reflect on theory and practice to generate original knowledge
3. design, implement, analyse, theorise and communicate research that makes a significant and original contribution to knowledge and/or professional practice
4. explain and critique theoretical propositions, methodologies and conclusions
5. present a complex investigation of originality or original research for external examination against international standards
6. communicate complex research concepts, plans and outcomes to the general community, peers and the national and international research community
7. apply expert creative, technical and professional skills to the field of work or learning
Duration and Availability
The course is by research and normally requires one to two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study.
