| Syllabus: | This unit focuses on the unwell person and uses a systems approach to assess, diagnose, plan, manage, document and evaluate patient care across the lifespan, including managing chronic conditions. Students conduct focussed assessment and therapeutic interventions relating to cardiovascular, respiratory and neurovascular systems. Students learn to assess and manage care needs of people with confusional states. Students apply therapeutic communication, critical reasoning and meet nursing competency standards in selected clinical contexts. The unit continues the development of knowledge of medication preparation, administration and recording, dosage calculations, legislative control. Students continue their learning about applied pharmacology relating to pain, nausea, vomiting and bowel management, this includes complementary pain therapy. The unit covers wound management including removal of sutures/staples and drains. Key skills addressed in the unit include: staging and management of pressure injuries; ANTT and sterile gloves; Continence (bowel and bladder elimination), catheter insertion and care and bladder washouts; stoma care; emesis management and end of life care. Recognising the deteriorating patient and responding to MET calls (adults) in clinical contexts. |
