Syllabus: This unit explores contemporary debates shaping social policies and programmes in 21st century Australia and other industrialised countries. These debates reflect a fundamental shift away from the notion of a welfare state to consider theories of social inclusion/exclusion, social capital and network societies. Over the past ten years, social policy debates have been characterised by reform strategies such as the Third Way, and partnership models. Substantial changes in the moral and philosophical attitudes towards, and resourcing of, welfare has occurred and continues to be enacted. This unit critically examines and assesses these changes.
