Syllabus: This unit develops students' critical understanding of human service organisations as contested sites of professional practice. Contemporary organisational, management and leadership theories are examined for their relevance to practice in the field. Tensions inherent in professionalism and challenges posed by the demands for efficiency and effectiveness by 'managerialism' are examined. Key management concepts will be critically analysed. These include issues of leadership, motivation, staff appraisal and development, strategic planning and resource and risk management. Students will develop knowledge and understanding of organisational change and development processes and how these may impact upon appropriate and effective service delivery. This unit will equip students with a range of strategic organisational management skills.
