This course provides a highly flexible study program that enables students to develop a study plan to suit their needs around the structure of three majors: viticulture, wine science or wine marketing and tourism. The wine industry is characterised by considerable crossover among core activities. For example, it is not uncommon for people engaged in wine production roles to also include responsibilities for, or interactions with, both viticulture and wine marketing. Likewise, people engaged in viticulture or marketing and tourism roles are often required to drawn on technical aspects of wine production and sensory evaluation of wines. This course enables students to obtain a solid scientific and practical understanding of their major of choice while also being able to select related units from other majors. The courses are suited to people who are currently employed in the wine industry who wish to advance their career options or those seeking to enter the industry. Students who are entering the industry with a limited science background are also able to select foundation units to assist with their transition.
A Bachelor degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution. Applicants employed for a minimum of three years within the wine industry in a management function may apply on the basis of prior learning.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
One year full-time or equivalent part-time. The course is available from the Margaret River Education campus and can be completed on a part-time basis externally (with intensive practical periods).
A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:
Graduate Certificate in Wine Industry (311707)
Students are required to select one of three majors - viticulture, wine science or wine marketing and tourism. Each major has a number of required and optional units. All students must complete a one-unit research project on a topic of their choice related to their major.
Graduates will be eligible to apply for membership to the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology.
Graduates of this Graduate Diploma may find employment in viticulture, wine making, wine marketing and or/wine tourism industries within Australia and overseas. The wine industry remains a strong employer of graduates and this program is also highly suited to individuals who are currently employed within the industry who wish to advance their career opportunities.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
