Introduction

This course is designed to extend theoretical knowledge and associated techniques to a higher level. Students focus on one of the two areas, although coursework and research may be carried out in both areas. The degree is suitable for those who plan to pursue careers as professional economists or finance specialists in both public and private sectors or in academia.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A degree or equivalent in commerce majoring in economics and/or finance with a high course weighted average, honours degree in economics or finance, Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce (Economics and Finance), or completion of a professional master in economics and/or finance, or related field with an above average academic performance.

Duration and Availability

The course is by research and normally requires one to two years full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

This course is studied as a research degree. The content of the degree should be determined in consultation with the postgraduate coordinator, School of Economics and Finance. Students without prior studies in research methods and statistical data analysis will be required to undertake relevant preparatory units. This will increase the stated course duration.

The Curtin Business School provide facilities and benefits for those studying this course by research, including access to suitable computer facilities, office space, financial assistance to attend appropriate intra or interstate conferences and towards associated research costs. It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research course to receive the Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce (Economics and Finance) but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission.
