Syllabus: Civil engineering - analysis tolerance and risk: collection and classification of data in civil engineering projects and installations. Application of statistical models to civil and structural engineering work. Specification of tolerances, acceptance criteria and evaluation of risks. Mechanics of solids: shear stresses in beams, torsion in non-circular members. Unsymmetrical beam bending. Stress transformations: Mohr's circle. Combined stresses. Introduction to tensor analysis using stress and straintensors; deformation analysis; case studies of analytical problems; and information technology developments and uses in civil engineering.
