Introduction

This course is suitable for personnel working in a range of health, educational and human service areas. It develops knowledge and skills in interpersonal communication, group leadership and an understanding of health and human development issues. It also enhances the existing experiential knowledge base of students and is an introduction to further training in professional counselling. It enables students to specialise in either the Addictions Stream, Counselling Stream or Rehabilitation Counselling Stream. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply for the Master of Health Counselling.

Course Entry Requirements

A bachelor degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline and at least one year full time or equivalent work experience in interpersonal service provision, for example teachers aide, social trainer or volunteer telephone counsellor. Applicants without a tertiary degree or equivalent but who meet the requirements for tertiary entrance and whose professional experience indicates they would benefit from the course are encouraged to apply and will be considered on a case by case basis. All applicants will need to complete a Curtin application for admission and enrolment form and provide a recent curriculum vitae including relevant work experience. Applicants should also include two referee reports, a certified copy of previous tertiary or other relevant qualifications, a written statement regarding why you wish to enrol in the course (no more than 500 words) and attend an interview. Special Note

The School of Psychology previously offered a Graduate Diploma in Counselling with two streams (Addictions and Health Counselling), a Graduate Diploma in Coaching that shared some units with the Graduate Diploma in Counselling, and a Master of Health Counselling (which has no common units with either of the Grad Dip courses). Approved changes to the Graduate Diploma in Counselling fully articulate the Graduate Diploma and the Master of Health Counselling courses such that the Graduate Diploma in Counselling constitutes the first year of Master of Health Counselling. The changes also offer three streams (Counselling, Addictions and Rehabilitation Counselling). The restructure of the programs requires a transition period for those students enrolled in current programs. Please make an appointment with Josephine Hudson, Program Coordinator to discuss your individual program regarding re-enrolment for 2008.
