305012 v.2 Master of Philosophy (Creative Arts) - Media and Information

MPhil(Curtin)

Course CRICOS Code: 061536G
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 2 Years

Introduction

This professional research degree combines research and production with coursework. It is designed for practitioners intending to update knowledge of contemporary theory and current practice, recently graduated students developing knowledge and skills in certain areas, current students continuing study for specific personal or professional goals, teachers and those intending to become teachers, and students from overseas seeking creative and or practical study opportunities in Australia.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelor degree in a relevant area.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning may be approved for coursework components by the Head of Department for students with a Bachelor of Arts, or equivalent, in a relevant area plus either: a first-class or upper second-class honours degree or a postgraduate diploma, or approved equivalent, in the same area and relevant and adequate research experience together with an appropriate practical or creative production record. Students without one of both of these requirements may be required to undertake appropriate bridging units.

Duration and Availability

The course is by research and normally requires one to two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study. As most units are offered only once in each year and in the required sequence of study, there is some limitation of choice for students who studypart-time.

Professional Recognition

Graduates from the Bachelor of Arts are eligible for entry into a number of professional organisations depending on their area of specialisation. The MCA is designed to facilitate and accelerate a graduate's progression, for example, from Membership to Fellowship status since that conversion is usually linked to published and/or exhibited work.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials. Some areas require students to provide their own equipment and/or material, or pay a fee for the Department to provide them (check with the individual schools/areas). Departments will not bear the expense of projects involving unusual costs, for example, a student wishing to make a film would have to provide the film stock and fund the production costs or a student mounting an exhibition would have to pay for framing and or installation expenses.

Special Note

It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research degree to receive a related postgraduate diploma but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission.
