This course is for qualified teachers who want concentrated work in the theory and practice of teaching English as a second language. Although the course is practical in nature, its theoretical basis allows students to make professional development a natural part of their teaching careers. It is designed to meet the needs of teachers who want to work in Australia or overseas, and is open to international students.
An approved bachelor degree or equivalent, a relevant teaching qualification and appropriate teaching experience.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Under certain circumstances, students who have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate TESOL will be eligible for up to 100 credit points recognition of prior learning.
This fee-paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study.
A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:
Graduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
Students study seven core units and one elective. Possible electives include units in Korean language, Chinese language, Japanese language, Indonesian language and units in research methods. Students whose first language is not English may be required to take units in English language development.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
Curtin University reserves the right to alter the internal composition of any course to ensure learning outcomes retain maximum relevance. Any changes to the internal composition of a course will protect the right of students to complete the course within the normal timeframe and will not result in additional cost to students through a requirement to undertake additional units.
