Introduction

This course of contemporary art practice develops abilities in observing, analysing and conceptualising information, and developing this research into a broad range of artworks. The course is interdisciplinary in nature and encourages students to incorporate conceptual and technical approaches from a variety of sources. Students produce creative work in a range of disciplines, including textiles, painting, print media, sculpture, jewellery and three-dimensional design, electronic arts, drawing, ceramics,fashion, photography, installation, performance and audio-visual technologies.

Note

Students may be required to participate in field trips and/or short term internships during semester or in the mid-semester breaks.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Provision exists for entry to applicants who have completed a post-secondary education diploma course or part of a comparable first degree program. Such applicants may be admitted with prior learning status if they can demonstrate the required skills and levels of achievement.

Duration and Availability

The course is of three years full-time duration or equivalent part-time study. This course is also available on-line through Open Universities Australia for students who live outside of the Perth metropolitan area.

Course Organisation

This course has a common first year to introduce the basic concepts and philosophy of contemporary visual arts practice and to provide an initial experience in studio disciplines taught within the Department. In second and third year, students elect an Art Studio unit, an Art Visual Culture unit and an Art Visual Research unit.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. Some units within this course may have a field component, for which costs may be incurred. In addition students will need to contribute to retainable materials fee. This amount may vary, depending on the unit of study.

Only the first two years of the course are available at Midland and only the second and third years are available at Albany.
