Syllabus:

There is mounting evidence for the re-emergence of infectious disease as a major threat to human health particularly as more pathogens become resistant to current antimicrobial chemotherapy. Molecular analyses of microbial pathogenesis offer new insights and solutions for surveillance, prevention and control of infectious diseases. This unit will examine cutting-edge molecular techniques for investigating microbial pathogenesis including real-time PCR, signature-tagged mutagenesis, IVET, micro-array, genomics and proteomics. Some of the topics for detailed discussion include bio-security and emerging infectious diseases, an update on the fight against HIV and tuberculosis, molecular pathogenesis of protozoan diseases, surveillance and control of agricultural pathogens and bacteria and viruses as causative agents of cancer.
