The uses of first and second moments of area. Bending moments and shear force diagrams. Stress and curvature in straight bars due to bending moments. Stresses on curved bars. The basic design of bolted points in machines and structures, welded joints. Design of drum, disc and band brakes. Design of clutches. Design of power screws.
