During the first half of this unit students will consider discourses of ethics and their relationship to reflexive practice and the development of skills for ethical practice. Students will explore a range of contemporary approaches to negotiating ethical issues and how ethics are produced through ongoing historical and cultural discourses. An examination of the beliefs, values and moral assumptions present 'everyday' professional practice and the articulations of 'stories' of practice that challenge and refine decision-making frameworks for acting ethically in time and place. In the second half of the unit an experientially based group facilitated by a skilled professional practitioner will be held over two days to explore individual beliefs and attitudes that can assist counsellors to become aware of any past or present life experiences that may enhance or diminish effective practice. |
