Throughout the course classroom studies are supplemented by laboratory sessions involving practical experience with a wide range of high technology computing and data collection equipment, such as GPS receivers, available at Curtin. Flexible learning approaches are a feature of the GIScience degree with extensive use of online learning and several units available via distance education over the Internet. Curtin's undergraduate commerce programs are designed to provide professional expertise in the major area of study, as well as a range of other skills that are highly valued in the commercial world. Besides theoretical concepts, the program also emphasises the application of knowledge to commerce and industry.

Professional Recognition

Graduates may obtain membership to the Spatial Sciences Institute.

Career Opportunities

Career prospects are available for GIScience graduates in many areas of government, industry and research, including mining and exploration, planning and urban development, environmental management and research, land and property information systems, asset management and utilisation, consultancy and systems development. Excellent opportunities are available both within Australia and internationally. A commerce degree is highly relevant to the requirements of today's business world, with the emphasis on decision making, trends in technology and associated work patterns, and other aspects of management in today's highly competitive business arena. In recent years, graduates with a Curtin commerce degree have had no difficulty finding employment. Many are in senior management positions in Australia and internationally.
