This course is designed for those seeking an understanding of the teaching and learning requirements associated with the education of students with disabilities and learning difficulties and wanting to develop practical skills within a variety of education settings. It examines the principal causes of disabilities and learning difficulties, educational assessment of children with special education needs and a wide range of management and remediation strategies. Classroom practices and teaching and learning strategies are developed from within mainstream and specialist classroom contexts. Participants are encouraged to apply and test these strategies in the workplace and evaluate them in light of specialist experience. Professional development is encouraged through action learning that is relevant and transferable to a wide variety of inclusive and specialist education settings.
A bachelor degree, or equivalent qualification, from a recognised institution. Applicants must provide evidence of current teaching, training or staff development responsibilities in which the practical requirements of the course can be satisfied. Australian applicants are required to have police clearance.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
This course is one semester full-time or equivalent part-time study. External study is available.
Graduates will be eligible for membership to the Australian Association for Special Education.
Graduates generally find employment within the government and non-government sectors of eduction, in schools, units and centres working with children with special education needs.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
