This accelerated honours program provides the opportunity to experience research and research management at an early stage. The program has been designed to meet the specific needs of highly performing students in science by providing an enriched programwith the option of fast-tracking the four year Bachelor of Sciences (Honours) into a full-time three year course. It encompasses the fundamental theory and practical components required for prospective students intending to become professional scientistsand technologists in their chosen field. It also has the flexibility to allow the choice of a major in Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Biology or Mathematical Sciences.
TEE Applicable Mathematics and at least two out of TEE Calculus, Physics, Chemistry or Biology, with a minimum TER of 98.0 or equivalent standing. It is also possible to enter the program at the end of a First Year science course if the student's CourseWeighted Average is greater than 80 per cent.
The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
The Accelerated Science Program is a three year full-time course only. Part-time study is not available. It is an intensive course, with research projects undertaken over the summer periods with special unit overload in some semesters. Two intakes are offered each year in March and August. Prospective students should note that places may not always be available for the August intake.
The Honours program is embedded within the course.
Depending upon the major area of study chosen, graduates may be eligible to join their relevant professional bodies such as the Australian Institute of Biology, Royal Australian Chemical Institute, Australian Mathematics Society or Australian Institute of Physics.
Students who graduate from this Accelerated Honours Science Program will be employed in a wide range of commercial, industrial, research or government organisations. The motivation, dedication and commitment required to complete such an intensive degree will stand the graduates in excellent stead with future employers. For specific field related career opportunities, students should refer to the section containing information about the preferred major. Graduates can expect a high level of international professional mobility.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
For details on the honours classes refer to the General Information section of the Handbook.
